I know it is spring when my sedum starts to bloom. The sun starts to shift so the plant starts to get more light and then the delicate pink flowers start to come. This is always a cheerful event even though I know that is my cue to get outside and start the spring clean-up and trimming.
The Garden Center
I have just started, in earnest, to set up the Garden Center. Will open soon! Enter the message board and use the "Quick-Click" Navagation to see part of what I have so far.

Visitors and Members: Please forgive me for the quick navigation bar I currently have. The old one just stopped working so I had to come up with something. Unfortunately, I'm not crazy about how this one turned out so I'll try to revamp the CSS, hopefully soon. Life gets busy so not sure when I'll get to fix it.

Gardening Mistakes « Result #1 on Oct 18, 2009, 1:30pm »
I thought this may be fun to have an ongoing thread about the stupid mistakes we have made during the learning process of gardening.
I am truly a newb still, when it comes to gardening, because I'm still making many, many mistakes.
I mentioned this somewhere else on this site but don't mind repeating my story. My first feeble attempt at gardening in my previous home turned into a disaster. I had very clay soil and I figured throwing a bag of sand, that was intended for sprinkling on winter ice, would work nicely to make the soil easier to work with in this two square foot area. The results of my attempt was my clay soil turned to rock hard cement. I later learned that by adding a very find sand, and very little of it, plus water was indeed a good part of the ingredients for concrete.
And yes, the first time I planted bulbs, even after looking at the example pictures of which side was up, I still managed to plant them up-side-down.

Re: Security System « Result #2 on Sept 18, 2009, 2:45am »
The cameras are in, four of them. The wireless ended up being way too expensive. But it is pretty cool. I'll try to get some pictures and tell you a bit about how they were installed.

Security System « Result #3 on Sept 7, 2009, 10:27am »
When I first moved here I wasn't sure about how safe it was in this neighborhood. It is slightly on the edge of a bit of a rough neighborhood so I had ADT come install the basics and signed a contract for 2 years. Then the contract ran out and I didn't renew it because it turned out to be a nice neighborhood until this last year. We had a neighbor's garage burn down because of some arson. My car got painted with graffiti and at the same time these punks spray painted garbage cans, fences, garages with their gang graffiti, a neighbor teen was mad at her mom and broke my front car window.
Then something very scary happened, which I won't get into here, but we knew we had to beef up security. The total bill came to about $1,000 dollars with $300 of it for the years service.
So this is what we have thus far. Door alerts (two are from the previous ADT installation), window glass break sensors in the living room, dining room, and kitchen. A motion detector (from my previous set-up from ADT) in the basement. A heat sensor in the garage. We will be installing two outdoor wireless cameras this week that are hooked up to our computers so we can monitor anyone hanging around our house plus it will be recording all the time. We really wanted window alerts as well but just on the first floor I have somewhere around 16 windows and each window alert is $100 dollars a pop and that would be $1600! That is outrageous! We are instead looking for a do-it-yourself window alert system or at the very least I think I may add a second lock on each downstairs window just to be safe.
This coming weekend I plan on taking a close look at all the old storm windows. On the front and back of the house there is a mixture of brand new and old but same type storm window that you can open for fresh air with a screen...you know..just normal storms. On the sides of the house remains the really old storms that are all in one piece and just glass. You can swing the whole apparatus open at the bottom for fresh air but there is no screen so we don't use them. I need to make sure all the latches are working on the storms. I need to re-glaze all the window pane glass on the first floor as some of that glass could be removed pretty easily, if they could get by the storm windows, since the glaze has fallen off some of the panes. Overall, the glaze is in bad shape.
One does not realize just how venerable you are until you really feel threatened. I am now wondering why all houses don't have bars on the windows or unbreakable glass. What seems like good sturdy doors now seem flimsy even with dead bolts.
So anyway, if anyone happens to read this I am curious to know what you have done in the direction of making your home secure. Have you ever really taken a close look as where your home may be venerable to burglars? Do you have any kind of a security system in place and do you use it? Did you specifically choose to live in a gated community or a apartment building with security guard?

Re: Flat Garage Roof « Result #5 on Aug 9, 2009, 9:11pm »
Did you do this yet? I'm sorry I didn't see this until now. Not that I am any help. I haven't a clue about fixing or repairing flat roofs. All I know is they are usualy a nightmare...flat roofs, that is. I did find a video that may be helpful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIiPxyyaBTU&feature=related
I didn't watch it because I must have something shut off that allows me to watch videos. I'm using Win 7 64 bit at the moment so things are a bit different than regular windows.

Re: Misty, Nigel or anyone... « Result #6 on Aug 9, 2009, 9:01pm »
Dear Clueless in Cleveland,
I appreciate you responding even if your clueless. But to give you a clue, I'm talking about where it says "Quick Click Navigation" and you should be able to click on say, Garden Center and it opens and then there are links to other stuff.
But it is working for me now but it seems it only wants to work "after" you click on a board so I'm definately going to install the better nav system.

Misty, Nigel or anyone... « Result #8 on Jul 30, 2009, 2:36am »
With my new computer I can't click on my "Quick Navigation" bar and get it to open. I don't know if it is my computer but I know I have javascript enabled.
Does it work for either of you? I'm thinking of getting rid of it and favor of another fancier one. I have it ready to go, the code is just in those files from my lap top so have to go digging through those files.
And Misty, you'll be happy to hear this: My Portal or first page you get to when you come here..... Well, either I'm going to get rid of it totally or I'm going to use one from SoCal that will go away after the first viewing based on cookies. Of course if you log out and and delete you cookies it'll be there the next time you come.

Re: Gorilla Glue « Result #9 on Jul 30, 2009, 2:26am »
There is Gorilla tape? I didn't know that. I love duct tape so I'm sure I'll love that!
This is a true story: I have a railing that is along 3 steps or so in my back yard. The previous owner had duct taped the railing "cup" (for lack of the right word) to the post and it came loose one day. Must of been there for years. Well, I tried to figure out how one would fix it the right way and finally gave up and got out a fresh roll of duct tape. It matches perfectly with the railing and it has held for I think 4 years now. Good stuff. Hee, hee. I should probably go put a fresh "repair" on it. Wouldn't want anyone really using that railing and it would finally break. Maybe I should do that every 3 years or so just to be on the safe side.
