 Calculate Cubic Yards
« Thread Started on Mar 9, 2008, 2:01am »

If you have measured the area in inches it may be easier to convert that to feet before figuring cubic yards. I will use feet in my example.

Let's say you have a 11 foot by 10 foot area you want to fill with concrete or stone or decomposed granite.

11 foot * 10 foot = 110 square feet

Now you need the third variable (height) before you can determine a cubic foot. Let's say you want a height of 3 inches. Since we are using feet we need to convert that to feet.

3 inches / 12 inches (or 1 foot) = .25 feet

Now we can figure the cubic feet

110 * .25 = 27.5 cubic feet

We know 3 feet = 1 yard

To determine how many cubic feet make a cubic yard you need 3 variables again.

3 cubic feet in length, 3 cubic feet in width, and 3 cubic feet in height or (3 * 3 * 3 )= 1 cubic yard

3 * 3 = 9 * 3 = 27 cubic feet equals one cubic yard

Now we just divide our cubic feet by 27 and we have our answer!

27.5 / 27 = 1.01 cubic yards

Here is the uncommentaried version:

Lineal Foot length * Lineal Foot width * height = cubic feet
cubic feet / 27 = cubic yards
