Sewer Gas Smell in your home?? Don't call the plumber yet! All sinks, tubs, showers, air conditioners, toilets and washers have a plumbing loop where water sits as a barrier to sewer gases or a plumbing configuration to prevent sewer gases from backing up into your home. If your drain or fixture is not used often it may be the water evaporated in the loop. A very simple fix is to run water in all your drains and fixtures and flush toilets that are under-used. Don't forget the basement floor drain and sump pump, if you have one. If this seems to take care of your sewer gas problem you can prevent the drain or fixture from going dry, as soon, by slowly pouring 4 ounces of mineral oil into the fixture or drain. This will slow evaporation substantially from the fixture/drain and should prevent the fixture/drain from going dry for months. Thanks go to my local gas company, Metropolitan Utility District, for this info.

By the way, this really works. I had a horrible sewer gas smell off and on and I finally figured out it was the sump pump. I just ran some water in it and problem solved.
