If you can't get good suction from your plunger when trying to unclog a drain, try coating the lip with petroleum jelly. It helps!
Oh, and for those of you who have never tried to unclog a sink you must plug the holes that most bathroom sinks have to prevent overflow. Either have someone hold their fingers over them or if you are alone, take a wet washcloth and stuff it in the holes as best you can and plunge away. Most of the overflow holes are located on the opposite side of the faucet and make sure there is water in the sink or you'll lose all suction if you don't do both of these things.
If you are having problems with your bathtub, they have a overflow cover. You don't necessarily have to remove this if you can hold your fingers over the cover holes.
For toilets make sure you use a ball plunger.
Good luck.
