I was born in Columbus at the Air Force Base (not sure if its still there). We live in PA now & as a child visited the Air Force Museum TOO many times. LOL. My dad was in the Air force & loves that stuff but my sister & I were bored to tears. First and most important I Salute your Father for serving. I'm not much for knowledge pertaining to our Air Force but this may be the place you mentioned "Columbus at the Air Force Base" which I believe was closed around 1980 so they state in this link: Rickenbacker Air Force Base

I appreciate it Misty, that you filled Ron in. I always hate it when I go to a site and people are talking about stuff I'm not privy to. Asking you was a bit awkward too but I knew you'd understand where I was coming from.

Just an update to whoever may still come around, I still have the "Lawn Custodian" that I love and we are going on 5 years. My biggest fear is he will decide he can make better money working for businesses. But so far, he has stuck with me. He really has it made on my block as almost everyone hires him and thus he can cut two peoples front lawns (between our sidewalks that go up to our front doors) in one shot. I still don't know how he does that steep slope but he does it. He is awesome and just the nicest most polite man I ever met.

Shoot, I just got through bragging how I still have this wonderful "Lawn custodian" and I found out today he is retiring. I don't blame him. I worried that it might be too much for him as he isn't a spring chicken. Now how can I ever replace this kind, lovely person who really took pride in his work. I'll never find anyone like him again.

Well, here we go again. Lawn custodian #1: Wants $40 bucks to mow my lawn. Wow, my old guy only charged $30 but we'll see how it goes. They are two young men so fingers crossed they work out.

Well, it turned out it wasn't the two young men after-all. They were just assessing the job and it was their fathers that were doing the work. Can't believe those fathers don't put their able-bodied strapping young sons to do the hard work. These two fathers are also getting pretty old to be doing such hard work. But they did a good job. It's rather costly at $40 bucks each time but then again, that hill is a nightmare so maybe I'll tough it out for this summer.
We'll see how it goes.

Update: They are doing a good job except these guys are edge trimming too much! I'll have to talk to them. This is the second lawn people who seem to thinking a bare strip along the sidewalk is good and the bare strip is 6-8 inches. No, that is not how you do it! If you do it right, it should be such a narrow line along the edge of the sidewalk. I think I'll tell them only trim if it is actually overlapping the side walk. Sheesh, what are they thinking? Now I have to reseed all that. grrr.

I know I'm talking to myself since I have closed this site for a few years now but I'm ready to reopen so here I am. I'm not happy with this lawn guy. The oldest guy is no longer a team with the younger old guy and he was very friendly and nice. So what I have left is the is the most unfriendly and hateful- seeming person I ever met. I'm seriously considering a robot lawn mower for next year but I need to figure out if my hill is more than 30 degrees as that is the steepest robots can do. The cost is pretty reasonable and even considering it will be recharging a lot, that has to be cheaper than what I pay for the whole grass mowing season.

Yet again, a new lawn guy. The younger guy just made me feel very uncomfortable and I hate to say this but I think he genuinely hated me because of my skin color and I'm serious. This has never been the case with any of my lawn custodians. Now I have my neighbor and he really seems to take pride in what he does and is just doing it for something to do.. He knows how to edge trim. Still costs me $40 per month but I think that is the going rate for a lawn such as mine. I think I'll be happy with him but again, he is older so not sure if he really should be doing this kind of work and in fact, he may not last long either but I'll take him while I have him.

I'm seriously looking into getting a robo mower but I need to do some math to see what slope my front lawn is. I know there are some that will go up a pretty steep slope (kind of expensive) but it should pay for itself in a couple years.
I was thinking about where I could plug it in as I don't have an outdoor outlet but I had a light bulb moment and thought of the old coal chute door on the side of my house. Currently it has wood over it on the inside but if I build a box that is really secured to the inside basement wall, I could then have access to electricity for it to recharge. But of course, I'm not sure if it is wide enough. I already figured out in my head how I'll wire the front lawn and back. So now I just need to get out that calculator and figure the slope, measure the width/height of the coal chute and see if there is a robo mower that will work.
Wish me luck.

I use to take care of my own yard, now I can't. I have my neighbor mow and trim every other week, though it needs it every. I cant afford to pay him every week. Now my fence is crappy, and over grown.
I wonder about killing those weeds, I have dogs and am concerned about poison. Should I spray them in the winter so to keep them from coming back in the spring? Or, should I just wait until spring?
Thank you for your input.

So weird I hardly ever come to this site except to vent a little here and there or check for spam at most, once a month and you are the first to post in eons and I'm here 16 minutes after you post. What a coincidence.
Anyway, I honestly wouldn't use poison to kill fence growth with dogs. I avoid any kind of poison just because I have a stray cat that comes around and he is always looking for greenery to eat in the fall and winter, which means he usually goes toward the fence line where trimming is more apt to be missed. Dogs too like to graze so that would be worrisome to me. . But I think your time frame for tackling weeds is gone using the poison method because they are probably done actively growing. Usually you want to do fall spraying before November but it does depend where you live. If you are in the south then you might have more nice weather that poison would work better this time of year.
If that guy is trimming every other week, is he not doing a good job along the fence? Could you afford to have him do one last good trim job? Gosh, I wish I lived near you, I'd come weed whack that for you. I can do that part, I just can't mow my lawn. Not sure what to tell you though, Stluee, kind of a decision only you can make as far as concern for your dogs. I sucks when money has to play a role in decisions like this. I totally get that and I cringe when summer rolls around and I have to come up with $40 a week, in the height of lawn growing season.
Nice seeing you around Stluee. Not sure when I'll be checking back. Hope all is well with you other than not having a lot of $$.
