What a messy job! I'm stripping my Mom's bedroom furniture which had been painted. I think the wood is black walnut but I'm not positive. It is pretty. I just finished all the drawers to the dresser and chest of drawers last night and now I have the bed head and foot board to do, the body of the chest of drawers and the mirror and the body of the dresser. There is a lot of detail on the mirror so that is going to be the time consuming part.
Luckily, it only took one layer of stripper. I use that orange stuff. I can't believe under the blue my Mom painted it years and years ago there was a layer of gold paint.
I'm still not sure if I'm going to regret stripping and restaining rather then just slapping another coat of paint on it because I did the easy stuff first.
Time will tell....

Hey tumbleweed! That detail work sounds like my kind of fun. Help is on the way.

Hey tumbleweed! I think my tool of choice for the detail stripping is going to be a cuticle stick. Then I wouldn't be as worried about marring the wood. A sharp metal tool is too scary to use. So don't forget to save it for me to do.

Seems last time you were here you spent hours stripping the doorway frames in the kitchen and bathroom. Gosh you worked hard on that! And you did a perfect job! And I thought I was a perfectionist. Actually, I was using a metal scraper on the drawers and I did slip. I'm hoping I can sand my boo boo out - it isn't very deep. There are these detailing grooves and I was trying to clean out the paint and opps. And you don't have to worry about it being done before you get here. I also noticed a couple of her drawers need re-gluing. Always, always when you take on a project there is something else that comes up that needs to be done. Can't wait to see you!

What a odd set of furniture. As I said I stripped the drawers in both the chest of drawers and the dresser. The dresser has one drawer that has a very dark stain on it and the rest of the drawers are light. No gold paint underneath the blue. The chest of drawers is just a medium stain with the blue and gold paint. Weird.

Sounds like the were trying things and not liking them, so they tried something else and then decided on the blue paint.

If you are using the orange stuff outside, which you really should do with any stripper, be prepared to have bees that like to hang around the orange scent. First there was one bee annoying me and then he left and brought back another and this happened 3 times until there were 4 or 5 bees just all around me.

My niece and I started working on my Mom's bedroom furniture and the different finishes was intentional! I think there may be 3 types of wood. The tops may very likely be mahogany wood or may have just been stained that way but the wood is beautiful. The sides are probably another wood but will stain just the same as the mahogony and not so pretty. Then the top drawers and sections on some of the peices is really light wood and soft.
So in the end it will be two stains (mahogony and a golden stain)and I think it is going to look fantastic!
We are just now using the finest steel wool for sanding so we are almost ready to restain. Woo Hoo. I can't wait to be done with this messy project.
