When you need to add stain, especially to refresh, instead of sanding the spot bare and starting over you can sand it down to get any shiny varnish off and make it smooth, then go over it with a rag dipped in stain.
That will keep it drip free and allow you to control the amount of stain you are using. The more bare spots can be gone over more than once.
If you match the color to the original stain, it saves a ton of time and elbow grease.

I've done that Barb and I'm glad you mentioned it because I probably wouldn't have thought to. In my kitchen where the wood was warped I had to sand it down and I just touched up the wood with stain there and it looks fairly good.
And welcome to the site.
