O.K. So I know tassels aren't a big rage right now but I still love them. (I'm very much into the "Old World" style.) Regardless of the current styles I wanted to share with you how to make them because you can do them for free or very cheap. So I said you could do them for free....well, do you have any old lamps with glass stems in storage and an old loosely woven sweater you don't want anymore? If yes, then your set. If no, then run down to a second hand store and you can pick both up for dirt cheap and you usually can make several tassels. Here's what you do. Take apart the lamp (they are usually fit together in sections with several glass and metal parts. Decide what parts you want to top your tassel. Start unraveling the sweater and cut double the length of how long you want your tassel to be. Lay each piece length-wise on top of the other in a reasonably neat pile. Once you have enough take several strands and tie a knot in the center of the strands. Now holding the hanging part of the tassels push & then pull them through the glass &/or metal pieces you want to use. With the hanging portion of the strands divided equally braid them and tie a knot in the very end. Trim the bottom of the tassel evenly and there you go. A one of a kind tassel.

Pretty neat but, what are the tassels for? Just decoration or do they have a function?

You can use them for tiebacks on your curtains for a more decorative element or just hang them anywhere like on the door knob like I did in that picture or on a dresser knob. I have little ones made with the glass from the lamp and a great big huge one. I just think they are neat and "old worldy" and have a touch more elegance with the added glass &/or metal.
