I bought a fridge 4 years ago and it is a piece of junk. It happened to be the only one that would fit in the depth of the space - either that or hang off a step so I had no choice but to purchase it.
Within the first 3 months and by the end of the first year all the plastic on the door basket slots broke so I had to order all new ones. None of this was covered under warranty even though the first ones broke within the warrantee period. The ones I got in the mail were of better quality so they darn well knew something was wrong....the plastic was so thin it was ridiculous!
Next to break was the edges of the veggie drawer (where it slides) so I ordered a new one of those. Again - too thin plastic. Now the slots that the drawers slide (mounted on the underside of the shelf) are broke. The same is true on the meat drawer.
The glass shelves are awful to clean and look all scratched up.
So I know I am facing having to purchase a new fridge soon and in order to buy a quality fridge to fit I'll have no choice but to deepen the fridge space by tapping into some closet space on the other side so a wall has to come down. Grrrr
I am just so mad! I can't remember exactly what I paid for this fridge but I think it was somewhere around $700. I will NEVER buy this brand again!
So my question to anyone: What brand are you happy with and does anyone have the wire shelves verses the glass? Can you even get the wire shelves anymore?

I have a Sears Kenmore and I love it. Its 3 or 4 years old and I've had no trouble with it. I have all the things you mentioned and have no problem with them at all. Believe me, with a 12 year old in the house it gets some rough treatment, trying to force drawers closed when there is something sticking out, shoving things around, etc.
I got it at a Sears store when it was on sale for $700, originally $1200. There wasn't a thing wrong with it. I heartily suggest you check your local Sears appliance store and watch for their sales.

I've been pretty happy with my Sears Kenmore washer and dryer so I'll be looking in Sears since you are pretty happy with your fridge, Barb. I dread having to buy a new fridge and all that I'll have to go through to get one to fit. I wish I had more money...I'd be revamping that whole area of the house.

Before you make any changes, measure the space and check Sears to see what sizes they have. The store where I got mine was quite small but they had several different sizes.

JJ when your ready to buy chk around in your area to see if there is a scratch -n- dent or floor model overstock store. The Best Buy has one around us that does that, so does HH Gregg.

Well, I'm still using the same ole cruddy fridge. I'm trying to save up the dough to buy a new one but it isn't easy. I know for a fact I won't find any to fit my space (I went to every possible store and no one has them the size I need) so the wall will have to be bumped back or maybe the wall can just be narrowed?? All I need are a couple inches.
I will do like you said Nigel. I don't mind a little dent or scratch if it means saving some $$$'s. I really do want to buy from Sears. I always liked their quality.

I got mine at the scratch and dent sale at Sears. They usually have a small one that happens when they are moving the item in place so its not where you would even notice it. There were two exactly like mine and the one I got didn't seem to have any mark on it. Even the salesperson couldn't figure out why it was marked down.
Sears also has sales on their out of stock merchandise.
I don't think I've ever paid full price for anything I've gotten there.

My new fridge comes tomorrow between 8 & 10 am! I am so excited! The old one has many of the same problems yours does, TW. In fact, I have bungee cords holding the condiments on the door shelves. All 3 broke in the 2nd year we had it. Everything in the fridge freezes & the temperature controls broke long aqo. When it defrosts itself, I get puddles of water inside the fridge.
I bought my new one at best buy. It was a 1200.00 fridge but I got the scratch & dent floor model for 475.00. 29.00 extra for delivery & they'll take the old one away! Its black with a stainless steel front. It only has a tiny scratch down near the floor.

They came at 8:15 this morning! Oh I just LOVE it! I forgot to tell you, its a Frigidaire. My dad said that's a really good brand & I trust his opinion. The freezer is a bit small, but the fridge part is huge with glass shelves, 2 clear crispers (humidity controlled) an a smaller crisper type drawer at the top for cheese & lunch meat & such. The door shelves are deep. I wheeled Bill in to have a look after the delivery guys left & he loved it too!

Wonderful! It sounds a lot like mine except my brand was junk. And I'm coming to hate glass shelves with a passion. But isn't it funny how we can get excited about something as mundane as a fridge. I know I'll be dancing for joy once the one I have is gone. I still can't afford to get one and I will not put it on a credit card. I'll just have to bite the bullet until I can save up my pennies. Anyway, yippee for you! It sounds really nice. And now you need to have all stainless steel appliances to match.

yeah, my oven looks pretty shabby now next to the sparkly fridge. I love glass shelves. My old ones got that scratched look, but not too bad. I'm hoping these ones stay nice for a long time.

I wonder if it is expensive to buy replacement glass shelves. I hope, though, I can find one that has all the wire medal shelves. But if I can't, maybe once they start getting scratched I can just by new shelves. But I have a way to go before I have enough cash to buy the fridge and bump back that wall.
Hope your enjoying your new fridge.

Ohh, I hate fridges. About 3 months ago we had such a problem with ours. It was an older one, so we got our worth out of it, but it quit on us in the middle of the night and all our food went bad. So we headed to Lowes and bought ourselves a brand new Frigidaire. (Misty, I hope yours gives you no trouble!) I was so excited. We brought it home, had to take the house door and stove door off just to get it in. Less than 30 days later, it broke on us. Quit, again, in the middle of the night! So all our food went bad, again! We called the repair man, and they actually told us that it would be over a week before they could get to us, that we should go buy ourselves a smaller mini fridge (OUT OF OUR POCKET) and then we could return it once they fixed our big one. Hubby said NO WAY, and we went back to lowes to get a new fridge. Now get this....Im not fibbing you... It happened again! Less than two weeks after we had the new fridge home, another Frigidaire, it broke on us! This time, Craig, my husband, got them to not only take the fridge back, but they gave us money for our incovenience, and they gave us a more expensive fridge for what we paid for the originals. So now we have a whirlpool. and it works great. Allthough, its ugly. LOL Not my style, not what I liked at all. But at least this one works. Im not sure about wire shelves, mine have glass in them. But they all seem to have good plastic, sturdy parts holding them in.

Gee, that must of been frustrating. I'm glad they gave you some $$ because you were out a lot of food not to mention the pain of throwing it all away, and like you said, the inconvenience.
I'm sure your fridge will last better than mine. Mine is simply an expensive piece of junk. Yesterday the track on the veggie bin broke. This is the part that is on the inside body of the fridge so it is not replaceable. Grrrr.(I might try to glue it just to buy some more time until I get the $$$'s saved up to buy a new one.

I hope nothing goes wrong with mine. So far so good. I'm loving it. If it does break, I hope it happens while its still cold enough out to keep the food cold until I can get a repair man in.
