When using a extension ladder to trim branches from a tree: 1. Have someone hold the ladder 2. Secure the ladder to the tree with rope, rubber car rack thingies If you don't you might end up like I did yesterday. Having the ladder and gravity conspire against you and fall about eight feet on your hip and then whack the side of your head. I'm sure it look pretty funny if anyone was watching ~ LoL

Another pointer about ladders. If a latch is broken, don't use the ladder even if someone else has supposedly figured out a way to make it useable and is using it regularly.
One like that collapsed on my dh. Several people had used it safely but it collapsed and his lower leg was caught in it on the way down. The dr said it was like trying to do a puzzle with toothpicks putting it back together. It took years to heal and will never be as strong as it used to.
If it isn't the way the manufacturer made it, don't trust it.
Sorry you fell Nigel. I'm glad you weren't seriously injured.

I'm so glad you O.K. and didn't break anything. I'm scared to death to get climb up ladders. I I start panicking at about rung #3 and my knees start shaking and I break out in a sweat. My BIL, just about a month ago, fell off the roof he was shingling. His son had just moved some boards with big nails right where he landed and he landed on cement. Broke some ribs and was out of commission for a while. But it doesn't surprise me as my BIL throws caution to the wind and goes at things like a maniac. LOL He has missed death by inches so many times. I'm going off topic here but one time he rolled his truck and I saw the truck afterward and the marks made in the highway, ditch and pasture. It just made you sick because he should have been dead. Anyway, I don't really know safety tips on how to go about shingling a roof but one of these days soon I'll need to shingle my garage so I guess I need to find out. Funny, if I can just make it up the ladder unto the roof I'm no longer scared. Well, we are having a big ole thunderstorm so I better get off the computer.
