Do you have a really pretty tree that you would like to mimic in other locations on your property. Well, take a cutting! I heard a great tip from another web site but forgive me, I can't remember where but when you take the cutting slant the cut so you'll remember which way is up and then cut the bottom straight across so you know that is the part that goes in the dirt.
Take the cutting in the fall. Select a branch that isn't too wide around but is mature wood. You do not want soft growth. Select a length that has buds about 6 inches apart.
Plant the cutting a few inches apart and about one inch down in a pot and place it in a sheltered area. You don't have to fuss over them. Just leave them be and in the Spring they should have developed enough roots to plant in the location you had in mind.
This is a real money saver! You may not get instant gratification but you will get long term gratification watching the tree grow that you propagated.

My grandmother used to do that with plants but I didn't know you could do it with trees. Thanks!

Barb, Some things are so easy to propagate and others aren't. I have a wild grape vine that I cut way back and for the fun of it I just tossed a 5- 4inch cuttings in some water. Only about a inch is actually in the water and they are growing like crazy. Honestly, I just wanted to see what would happen. I really don't want more wild grape vine plants in my yard at all, as they can get to be a pain.
Maybe I'll see how they do as an inside plant and stick them in some dirt.
Wanted to add, it is a very old vine and the cuttings I took are from very old wood about 1" across so probably not even the optimum cuttings and they still grew. LOL And I don't even have a green thumb.
Of course some plants will need a rooting hormone to get a start but others not.

I love grapes. I'll have to see if I can get some cuttings from a concord grape (my favorite) and try that.
