I was out digging up my garlic which grows intertwined between flowers (and embarrassed to say, weeds) and some garlic plants were growing very close to the brick flower bed border. Not even thinking, I shoved my shovel down right near the brick and I cut a baby snake in half. It was horrible! I didn't know it was there but should have known they like to lay in places like that. What was horrifying was that it still slithered away. I don't know how it did that? I am just sick about it and every time I go to my flower bed I'll think of that horrifying moment. I feel bad enough when I accidentally cut a earth worm in half although I know sometimes they still survive but this was just a baby garden snake, perfectly harmless....and just a baby. I know a lot of people will intentionally kill a snake, even garden snakes, but I don't like to kill anything if I can help it except cockroaches and slugs. Those I hate so much my reason for respecting life goes out the window.

I would not have felt bad, I would have freaked out! And ran, never to go back to that flower bed border again. LOL Dont feel so bad, cause snakes sometimes kill inocent animals, maybe this one took more of his share and deserved to die. You would hate to be around me. I am all for not killing and respecting life, but snakes are my exception. And spiders. LOL Anytime I see a snake, my husband HAS to kill it, or I fear that it will always come back to get me.

I understand how you feel. I had a cat run out in front of me over 20 years ago and I hit it. I still think of that cat when I drive past that spot.

Becky, I guess everyone has their phobia's. You with snakes and spiders, me with cockroaches and slugs.
Barb, that must of been awful. The only thing I have hit with my car besides a small bird here or there was a goose. It was horrible because it made such a horrible noise. I was happy I was going as fast as I was as I'm sure it was killed instantly.
My biggest fear is someday I'll hit a deer or bigger animal and it'll still be alive in pain. Oh, please God, don't ever let that happen to me. That would haunt me forever.
