Since I am still waiting for my new computer tower and hardware to safely arrive here at home I found myself reading more before I go to sleep. So what the heck, might as well give you my opinions.
A few days ago I read, "The Heir" by Barbara Taylor Bradford. I must say I was never so happy for a book to end. In fact, I skipped reading many portions and would of stopped reading it completely if I could have found something else to read. I think I read her first novel, "A Women of Substance" and I don't remember it being this bad.
What I didn't like:
Rate: 1 being the worst score and 10 being the best I give it a 2.
Next book I read yesterday:
"The Burnt House" by Faye Kellerman
I loved this book. I got to know the main characters of the book pretty well. It was a murder mystery and the author did a wonderful job of getting the reader involved and dying (pun not intended) to find out who was guilty. Admittedly, toward the end of the book one does know who did it far before it was reveled but still, the writing was so well done I wanted to keep reading. It had a realistic ending and for that I was grateful. The only negative thing I have to say is that there is no way this detective could have spent as much money as he did investigating the crime in the book but then again it is fiction so I guess if the author wanted a unlimited budget, he could.

Last night I started reading "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel. I'm just on Chapter 23 of 99 but so far, I'm loving it. Yann Martel is a very articulate and entertaining writer, at least thus far. He certainly is pulling reactions from me from smiles to cringing. A very unusual read but I'll give you my final judgment when I'm finished.
Edit: I read into the wee hours of the morning and stopped right before the climactic end and finished it just now while I ate lunch. The only reason I stopped reading in the wee hours was to make it last longer and there was the fact that it was nearing 5:00 a.m. and I needed to sleep.
I must say, it was one of the better books I have read in a long, long time. There were a few bits in the beginning of the book, regarding religions, that was over my head and I found I didn't have the inclination to study what his character (or the author) was trying to say. After moving on I did actually go back to reread those parts and did come to "get" some of it but it is still a bit confusing to me. But let me tell you, once you get past that part you cannot put the book down.
If you are a animal lover and have a weak stomach, like me, I can almost guarantee you will still want to continue reading regardless of the gruesome details. It is so worth it. I really encourage you to read it.

What I didn't like:
- I never really got to know the main character much less any of the other characters and this made me not really care what happened to them.
- There was so much repetition of descriptions it seem they were just "fillers" to make the book longer.
- The names of the characters were confusing.
- It was probably the most unrealistic book I ever read.
- The time-line was irregular and introductions to new characters were introduced far to late in the story. It seemed the author did minimal research, just found a few "period" specific topics/objects/subjects and used them so much I wanted to throw the book out the window.
- The writing itself was overall at a 6th grade level and then every so often the author used a word that was not typically used by anyone, as if she scoured the dictionary to find a unique word to make it more of an intelligent read. Very strange to me.
- And as I said, the ending did not leave me wanting more. As I said, I was thanking God it was over.
