Are there certain smells that take you back to your childhood or just make you think you are in heaven? I have a few favorite smells. 1. Hazelnut creamer in coffee. My sister uses it and I just drool over the smell. I don't necessarily like to drink it (I'm a black coffee drinker) but it just makes me euphoric. If it were a perfume, I'd wear it. 2. Wild roses. Oh they are yummie smelling and they do take me back to my childhood because we had wild roses growing all over the place and I'd stand and sniff them for so long I finally couldn't smell them anymore. 3. There is a thistle (I have the name of it somewhere) that has a pretty lavendar feathery bloom and it is just the most wonderful smell. I honestly don't think I have every smelled anything better. Again, this was something I always stopped to smell when I was little. As an adult, if I happen to run into this thistle I MUST stop and smell and it just brings me right back to the days I'd romp all over the ranch. 4. Bread baking in the oven. I suppose this also takes me back to when I was a kid as my Mom made all our bread. I remember watching her make the loaves and she'd also make dinner rolls (buns) and I remember being amazed at how fast she was making those perfectly round buns. (And to me, there is nothing better tasting then bread fresh out of the over with real butter. yum. I'm a bread-a-holic, btw.) Thats all I can think of for the moment. Anyone else?

Mmmmm...bread baking is one of my favorites too! I also love:
1. lilacs. They remind me of happy summer days at a favorite aunts. She passed away a few years ago & I planted a lilac bush to always be reminded of her.
2. fresh ground coffee. YUM!
3. pumpkin pies
4. gasoline (I have no idea why, but I love the smell).
5. Babies when they are snuggly & clean.
6. My dog Scruffy when he comes in from the sunshine. (but not my Jade. Jade is a pit bull & pitties have a nasty smell, but they are so lovable anyway).
7. steaks cooking on the grill.
8. rubber cement
9. burning leaves
10. sawdust
11. pipe tobacco being smoked
There are probably a million more, but those are my faves I guess.
How about smells that make you gag or that you really hate?
I hate the smells of sweaty men, rain when the worms come to the surface (Shannon doesn't believe me that worms have a smell, but they DO), pit bulls, liver, burning rubber, and cigars.

Some of those I really like too like 1, 2, 5, 9, 10 & 11. I don't mind the smell of gasoline but as a kid we had a huge tank of oil. There were 3 holes in it of different sizes (for Papa bear, Mama bear & Baby bear, lol) I guess for attaching certain hoses for certain equipment. Anyway, I loved sniffing that oil. We all did (my siblings) for some reason.
I also forgot a couple I love, love, love and that is freshly mowed grass, fresh hay and I have kind of a weird one but I kind of like the earthy smell of horse stables.
What I hate most in this world is when someone boils chicken. I will throw-up. I've banned it from ever being done in my house. I also get pretty nauseated when a turkey or chicken is put in to roast but just at the beginning. After it has baked a while it smells o.k. I hate the smell of cigars too. And cheap perfume but it also gives me a horrible headache so that is probably part of why I hate the smell.

Yeah, boiling chicken does smell pretty bad. Boiling cabbage does too, although I like to eat both...just not smell it & those smells seem to permeate the house for a long while after cooking too. UGH I should've invited you over yesterday. I boiled chicken. I was making home made chicken pot pie & needed to precook the chicken.

No, you shouldn't have invited me unless of course it was a planned tactic to get me to never come see you again. Usually when it is Thanksgiving and that turkey is put in the oven I become the official gofer just so I can be away from the house. Everyone knows I won't have any part in getting the turkey ready. I did it once and never again. I was so sick to my stomach by the time dinner was ready I couldn't eat. So I leave the whole turkey business to someone else. I know there are all kinds of good meals that require boiled chicken, like homemade chicken noodle soup, but it just can't be done in my house. Just like cabbage, the boiled chicken smell lingers for hours. Yuk.

Without question it would have to be "back to your childhood" and a small list of things that would trigger those fond and special moments as a child.
1. The smell of autumn/fall (brisk) winds that brings on those special memories as a child walking to school through leaves or dad taking us kids for a country ride to find those walnut trees so that we could collect as many walnuts as we could for mom. She would use them for baking holiday cakes, not to mention, homemade chocolate fudge.
2. Those "Trick 'O' Treat" kids coming up to the door wearing their costumes saying "trick o treat" and holding out their bags to fetch some goodies reminds myself of those days as a child. Just the smell of all those candies would trigger it! Just a note: we couldn't afford most costumes of today! We made our own back then and lord only knows, we were so proud!
3. Thanksgiving was and will always be fond memories for this household as family watched tv while mom and oldest sister would prepare that bird for us. You could smell it throughout the house and we could not wait to sit down at the table. Oh did I forget the yams... oh yes, yams was a treat for all of us back then.
4. Just smelling a live Christmas tree would set it off in a minute. The entire house would smell of pine and us kids would beg mom and dad not to take it down! Leave it we asked... please, oh please! Anyways, unwrapping the presents (as if the smell meant anything) was those brand new toys! Us kids wanted to run outside to show our friends what we got. I must had burned up the "Lone Ranger" cap pistol with all the caps I fired!
Well these are just a few for the seasons mentioned and down the road may mention the smells as a child for Spring and Summer.

I love the smell of real christmas trees and that does bring back childhood memories. It is surprising how, back in the olden days, getting one or two toys was a thrill and they weren't exactly expensive toys either. Kids now-a-days (gosh, I never thought I'd say that phrase, lol) expect cell phones, laptops, ipods and all those expensive electronics.
I remember getting one doll and being absolutely thrilled. Our stockings were pretty basic with just oranges (a treat for us) and nuts. Speaking of oranges, they smell pretty good.

Nothing like a puppy or kitten licking your nose with their young breathe type smell. I love the smell of real christmas trees and that does bring back childhood memories. Lordy Tumbleweed as I hear you on "Kids now-a-days" expecting so much beyond what Christmas is meant to be. Some holidays we only got two presents each and boy that really drained dad (money wise) as he worked so hard to provide for all of us kids. p.s. And bread baking in the oven!
