My cats have done a number on the first two steps of the carpet in my foyer that take you to first landing and the first two steps from the kitchen that lead to the same landing, plus the landing is shredded by naughty cats.
Well, I somehow had it in my head that I could get the carpet ripped out in one day during my spare time and then sanding and refinishing would be done in the next several days.
I haven't even got the steps done yet. The number of staples in there is unbelievable. The big staples are easy but there are millions (maybe an exaggeration)of tiny little ones and I can't sand that all down and refinish it until every last one is out. To top that off, all the risers are painted with one billion coats of paint and the top layer is pealing.
This means I either have to scrape off that top layer without messing up the other layers and then use a fresh coat of paint or it means stripping the risers and sanding and staining.
One other option is to get it as smooth as I can and use veneerer, which is what I did on my back door steps and they look excellent! I think I'm leaning toward this option.
The good news is, the treads are in good shape and should refinish nicely plus I was happy to discover one of the most plush paddings underneath, that I have ever seen!. It looks in perfect shape so I'm safe to assume the dining room and living room hard wood floors have been protected from any spills or water damage that occured after the carpet was installed.
Have you ever regretted starting a project? I think I am. One last word. Please people, don't put carpeting over hard wood floors. Ever!
