I had a very wimpy chandelier in my dining room. It was your traditional three tiered brass chandelier with, I guess, about 30ish various shaped crystals. It was somewhat pretty but it just looked too small for the room and almost went unnoticed.
There was, however one chandelier that I had fallen in love with at Home Depot and I would gaze at it debating if I should break down and buy it. It was $450 and pretty darn steep for my budget. It had amber crystals rather than clear and it would have been perfect for the color scheme in my dining room. To top it off it had these wonderful amber glass beaded shades that were so striking.
So what did I do? I didn't buy it. LOL Luckily they were selling the glass shades separately so I bought those and they looked great on the wimpy chandelier but something was still missing. It still didn't have the right impact for the size of the room..
My solution was to darken the ugly brass to a darker color and that did the trick. It works in my dining room which is now my favorite place in the house. Maybe a favorite because it is actually one of the rooms that is completely done. Decorated and totally done!
So I guess my thought here is don't just be ready to take out all the lighting for updating when you are remodeling your home. Instead, think of ways to make it work, to enhance it.
(Opps, I edited this because my memory doesn't serve me well, the chandelier is 3 tiered and has 30ish crystals verses the 2 & 20ish I said)
