Let's say you have a nice piece of wood but don't want it to split when you pound a nail into it. What do you do? Flip the nail over and put the head on a flat surface and just give the tip a couple light taps with the hammer. YES, I'm serious. A sharp nail does not mean a better chance of NOT splitting the wood, in fact it is just the opposite. A rough nail head will "grind" into the wood putting pressure points in different areas where as a sharp nail will put pressure right at the tip and hense...split wood. This tip provided by my brother.
