Before you start to chisel that piece of wood to fit around something take a look at the grain. You should be able to see where the grain is widest apart. You want to chisel from the widest part of the grain so if it splits it won't split downward or too much. (Tip from my brother, thanks bro) It is best, however, to chisel across the grain first if at all possible and then with the grain. This will help prevent he wood from splitting. And take it slow taking small parts off at a time. If you are chiseling convex curves (over the hill) use the bevel side up. If you are chiseling concave curves (down in the valley) use the chisel bevel side down.
