I got this tip from my appliance repair guy and since heard it from several different sources.
Remove your lint screen and take it to your kitchen sink, put dish detergent on it and give it a good washing, rinsing well. It seems dryer sheets leave a residue that can make your dryer work harder and burn out quicker.

I read not long ago that the build up can cause them to block completely and actually increase your risk of fire.
While we are discussing dryers, you should clean out the vents from the dryer to the outside and make sure there isn't lint build up. Its also a good idea to vaccume or use a brush in the actual lint vent thing in the dryer itself. My mom had a dryer catch on fire because hers was plugged and she couldn't see it so she didn't know.

I think people just don't think about that at all so I'm glad you brought it up. I just cleaned the vent that goes outside right before the weather turned nasty and it was amazing how much lint was in there and I clean mine every year.
One year at my old house a bird made a nest in the vent. I also had a bird fall in my vent, poor thing. I'm so glad I heard it flapping around in there ...oh gosh, I don't even want to think about what could have happened.
I also read a long time ago you need to clean the area from your lint filter to where your outdoor vent attaches and I'm not sure how you do that and I have never done it so I think I'll do a search on how to go about it.

Actually that is what I was referring to when talked about the lint vent thing in the dryer itself. I just couldn't think of any other way to say it.

Oh sorry. So you can just use one of those long wire brushes to reach down in there? Like I said, I've never done that.

I've seen them advertised. I usually just use the vaccume cleaner hose and hope it does the job.

I think I tried using my vacuum hose and it didn't fit. I need to get one of those brushes.
