Twenty Good Reasons to Plant Trees
1. They make a wonderful wind break! Farmers use wind breaks all the time to prevent the winds sweeping away top soil. (Remember the dust bowl?)
2. They prevent soil erosion from heavy rains.
3. The decaying leaves, twigs, branches enrich the soil.
4. The decaying leaves on a forest ground will absorb and filter water.
5. Trees provide clean oxygen for you and I to breath. The tree foliage works as a natural air filter of particulate matter such as dust, micro sized metals and pollutants such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, ammonia and sulfur dioxides.
6. If you have the acreage trees can provide an excellent income by selling the trees for planting or by selling the trees for wood.
7. Trees can provide you with fresh fruit and there is nothing better than a cherry, peach or orange pulled right off the tree.
8. Trees save energy in the winter. Studies show windbreaks can reduce fuel consumption by up to 30%!
9. Trees can provide a sound barrier from nearby noise such as traffic on a nearby road. The leaves, branches and twigs absorb sounds of different frequencies.
10. Trees save energy in the summer by producing shade. Planting one tree that shades your home can have the effect of putting an air conditioner or two in your window.
11. Trees will provide shade to your pets that are outside as well as your farm animals or any wild creature. Trees that reduce the wind can significantly reduce animal stress.
12. Trees make a great place for wildlife to nest, breed and when the snow falls provide food for some species.
13. Having a row of trees will keep snow drifts from piling up in your driveway and in unwanted areas if located in the proper place.
14. Having a row of trees strategically located will help keep snow on the fields where moisture is needed.
15. Having wind breaks along your fields will also improve crop yields because hot winds can do damage and winds can blow debris damaging newly planted crops.
16. Raking the leaves will give you physical exercise.
17. Trees have monetary value. My neighbor bought the home next to me primarily because of the remarkable tree in front of the home. You plant a beautiful tree and someone may be willing to pay top dollar for you home when you go to sell it.
18. Trees provide privacy. No one likes the neighbors able to see everything one does in their backyard.
19. Tree canopies and root systems slow and reduce storm water runoff, flooding and erosion as well as help filter water runoff from sources of water pollution into our rivers and storm drains.
20. And last but not least trees have great aesthetic value. They are beautiful to look at, to listen to as the breeze ruffles their leaves.
Fall is a great time to plant a tree but if you are in the Northern states you may want to wait for Spring. So go plant a tree! Or go plan which tree you want to plant, come Spring!
