For the life of me I can't id this maple. It is my neighbors tree and I've always been an admirer of it because of the color. I know it is brown much of the time but I can't remember if there is some point it turns greener. (I'll have to let you know.) Yesterday when I was wheeling Mom around to look at Spring flowers I took a closer look at the tree as the seed pods were catching the light in an amazing way. The red wings and the yellow base of the seed are so eye-catching. The tree itself is huge, about double the size of his home which is a 1 1/2 story house so judging by the first picture somewhere around 50 feet or more feet in height. It is wonderfully shaped and beautiful. Anyway, I have searched the internet for hours and I give up. I am defeated. Does anyone know what type of maple it is? My neighbor is gone, long term, so I can't ask him if he knows. I know it isn't just a really rare variety because I see a few scattered about town. Pictures taken just yesterday, April 21st. I think it must be a Japanese Red Maple (acer palmatum autropurpeum) variety but they seem to not grow that large and it is not as red as some of the JRM's. Or maybe it is an Autumn Flame Red Maple tree, (Acer rubrum), 'Autumn Flame'.I really don't know that much about trees and have a hard time getting interested enought to remember much that I read. Shame on me.
